Ministry of Internal Affairs sanctions 167 electric‑scooter riders in nationwide evening operation
Operation ran yesterday from 17:00–22:00; most offences were failure to wear reflective vests and helmets.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) sanctioned 167 drivers of electric scooters during a nationwide evening enforcement action that took place yesterday between 17:00 and 22:00, the ministry reported. The Traffic Affairs Sector at the MIA recorded the total number of violations during the operation.
Most infringements were for missing reflective vests and helmets
According to the ministry, the majority of the 167 violations concerned riders who did not wear reflective vests when operating electric scooters at night and those who were not wearing protective helmets.
"The Mobile Unit for Road Traffic Safety recorded 81 violations, in the area of RPD Ohrid 26, and in the area of RPD Bitola 23 violations, while the remaining violations were recorded in the areas of other regional police departments," the ministry said in a statement.
During the action authorities confiscated two electric scooters. The ministry added that appropriate measures and sanctions were imposed for all detected offences in accordance with legal provisions.
Police teams also identified 206 violations of other kinds during the same control. The ministry said it will continue intensified traffic checks aimed at improving safety for all road users.
The report also noted a wider trend: police have registered over 10,400 violations in a four-month period among drivers of scooters, mopeds and motorcycles.
