Heatwave Intensifies — All of North Macedonia Under Orange Alert

All of North Macedonia has been placed under an orange alert today as a heatwave strengthens, with air temperatures forecast to climb between 32 and 40 degrees Celsius, meteorologist Slavcho Poposki said.

“In Skopje and its surroundings the maximum temperature will rise to around 39 degrees,” Poposki said, underlining that the hottest areas will be lowland and central regions.

The forecast calls for mainly sunny conditions with only small to moderate localized cloud development. A light to moderate wind is expected, predominantly from the south and southeast. During afternoon hours, mountainous areas may see brief instability accompanied by heavy showers, thunder and gusty winds.

Health and safety advice

Poposki appealed to residents because of the heatwave: "Because of the heatwave, I urge citizens to avoid going out during the hottest part of the day (from 11:00 to 17:00) if not necessary, and to drink more fluids." He also warned people to monitor children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses for signs of heat stress.

The orange alert signals very high to extremely high temperatures across the country; local thunderstorms in upland areas may briefly lower temperatures but can bring intense rain and strong gusts. Authorities and the public are urged to follow local guidance and take basic precautions during the coming days.
