Conception of Saint John the Baptist — a day for family prayers and hope

Orthodox Christians today mark the Conception of Saint John the Baptist, a feast that highlights hope, family bonds and faith in miracles.

The celebration recalls the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, an elderly, pious couple who longed for children but remained childless into old age. Their persistent prayers are central to the holiday’s meaning.

The biblical moment

According to tradition, the archangel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah in the temple and announced that Elizabeth would bear a son named John — the same John who would later baptize Jesus in the River Jordan.

As the story goes, Zechariah was struck silent by the extraordinary news and did not speak again until he wrote the child’s name on a tablet, after which his speech returned.

Among believers the day is strongly associated with parents and children: families are encouraged to pray for their children’s health, happiness and future, and to show them love and support. Couples struggling with infertility often turn to the day for special spiritual consolation and blessings.

Traditional observances also treat the day as especially favorable for scheduling baptisms. Customs emphasize avoiding quarrels, dark thoughts and hard physical labor while promoting love, harmony and a warm family atmosphere.
